Two Classes of Gamma-ray Bursts
If gamma-ray bursts are at cosmological distances, as suggested by their isotropy on the sky and the comparative deficiency of weak bursts, then they represent radiated energies of ∼ 10 51 erg, and imply the release of an even greater energy. Only neutron stars and black holes have binding energies sufficient to power such extraordinarily violent and energetic events. General considerations of ...
متن کاملThe Correlation of Gamma - Ray Bursts with Active Galactic Nuclei
We search for angular correlation of gamma-ray bursts with cataloged quasars, BL Lac objects, and AGN using a large sample of relatively well-localized bursts detected by WATCH on board GRANAT and EURECA, IPN, and BATSE (327 bursts total). A statistically significant (99.99% confidence) correlation between GRB and MB < −21 AGN in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.32 is found. The correlation with ...

متن کاملCosmic Gamma - Ray Bursts
1. Abstract GRBs have remained a puzzle for many high–energy astrophysicists since their discovery in 1967. With the advent of the X–ray satellites BeppoSAX and RossiXTE, it has been possible to carry out deep multi-wavelength observations of the counterparts associated with the GRBs just within a few hours of occurence, thanks to the observation of the fading X-ray emission that follows the mo...
متن کاملGamma-ray bursts.
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are bright flashes of gamma rays coming from the cosmos. They occur roughly once per day, typically last for tens of seconds, and are the most luminous events in the universe. More than three decades after their discovery, and after pioneering advances from space and ground experiments, they still remain mysterious. The launch of the Swift and Fermi satellites in 2004 an...
